Haven’t written in awhile. My computer’s wonky, so it’s hard to write.
I’ve read a book, seen a movie based on it: Black Robe. The story of a Jesuit priest, year 1634, New France (Canada). He’s to go across country to the Jesuit mission among the Huron Indians, because of a distress call.
The wide screen version has majestic vistas of Western Canada in fall and early winter. The full screen DVD was disappointing.
The novel by Brian Moore is a quite pedestrian telling of the story. The book is marred by continual profanity. I suppose that’s how people talked, but I don’t think it was necessary. Another problem is a lack of understanding of what motivated missionaries.
Yes, the early missionaries failed to appreciate the indigenous cultures. But they were motivated by love of God and of the Indian peoples. Much of what we know about the pre-European people came from missionaries who learned their language and recorded observations in journals.
I’ve come to think that missionaries go to meet Christ already there, unnamed perhaps, but present and active nonetheless.
At a key moment in the book, an eclipse occurred. Of course, we know the astronomical causes. But the timing of the event has consequences that are nothing short of miraculous.
The Indians ask the Jesuit, who has seen the worst, “Do you love us?”
It’s a powerful scene that makes the problems unimportant.
Such love is the love of God. Occasionally humans love so deeply, selflessly, as is demanded here. But the majority of us need God’s Spirit to love in such a way. One could say that such love is of God alone.
