“…until Christ is formed in you” Gal 4:19 (NRSV)
v For information We read primarily with our minds, though heart and spirit are available, to learn content, and to become familiar with what is in the text.
- Silent
- Faster than other levels
- May note questions for later, but the goal is the whole, not the parts
v For education We read primarily with our minds, while instructing heart and will how to live daily according to God’s Word, become obedient, and be doers not hearers only.
- Often silent
- A little more slowly
- May research a topic, biography, or issue
v For consolation We read primarily with our heart and emotions, seeking comfort, assurance, emotional healing and stamina.
- May read aloud, slowly, repeating
- May pause to let the meaning sink in
- May memorize, “learn by heart”
v For inspiration We read primarily with heart and spirit, seeking to rise in faith to “the heavenly places,” Eph 2:6 (NRSV), where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. We praise and adore, we make melody.
- Usually read or sing aloud
- May repeat
v For transformation This is meditative and contemplative reading, traditionally called “lectio divina.” Engaging the whole self, we may imagine participating in the narrative. We re-create as closely as possible the sights, sounds, smells of the biblical setting. Cultivating stillness of heart, we listen for the still small voice of God’s whisper. The goal is “the Word made flesh,” literally incarnation: as we bear the cross daily, the mind of Christ taking root, growing, and bearing fruit in us.
- May repeat aloud for a lifetime
- May focus on single word or phrase
- Goal is to have the mind of Christ, to incarnate the Living Word in self
